Bellevue Garden
"We have the opportunity, now, with community involvement and with the support of the administration at Bellevue Middle School, to create something that will be a life changing experience for kids." - Charlie Tygard, Metro Councilman-at-Large.
| NEW! Community Planning Charrette Update |
A group of Bellevue residents and community leaders were inspired to travel in the summer of 2009 to Berkely California to see for themselves the origin of the Edible Schoolyard . The Edible Schoolyard, conceived by Alice Waters, is a one-acre organic garden and kitchen classroom at the Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle School in Berkely. Teachers and Edible Schoolyard Educators collaborate to integrate the garden into the school's curriculum, giving students the opportunity for hands-on learning. Students participate in growing, harvesting, and preparing meals with the plants they grow in the garden.
Our Bellevue team brought back with them the idea of adopting the Edible Schoolyard concept on the grounds of Bellevue Middle School. In concert with our local schools, and in collaboration and support from the Bellevue community, we believe that such a project will not only benefit our children, but also our community as a whole.
This 5 minute video is a report of that trip and an introduction to the community of this recent project.
